  1. South has 8hcp including Q of pard's suit. 1S seems called for. If he did bid 1S then North has a problem given he has opened weak with a balanced hand. 2H should show a 6 card suit, while 1NT would show 15-17hcp. With marginal opening hands that don't have sensible rebids, consideration should be given to passing. Some would open 1NT on the North hand given the good 5 card suit and the outside A.
