  1. South doesn't have a good bid if playing ACOL. Perhaps 2C with a 3 card suit is least of the evils, but at least it is forcing, whereas 3D is not with most systems playing this as a limit raise.

    A better ACOL sequence would be 1NT p 3NT ap. South doesn't quite have the strength to make a slam try. The 5 card suit is nice and helps in marginal decision cases. If South did slam invite North should not accept with the 13hcp and 4333 shape.
