At some tables North passed initially. Although only an 11 count, there is an easy rebid so 1D looks fine.
East's 1S looks very suspect and will often create trouble. In this case they got lucky and found a fit.
Without interference one table went 1D 1H; 2D 2H; 3H 4H which seems fine, although a logical alternative for South is 2 NT instead of 2H.
