As a general rule, South should not lead away from an ace defending a suit contract. In the above case East has shown probably 9 cards in two suits so the chances of him being short clubs is quite high. Also West has shown a preference for diamonds rather than NT so gain could be short somewhere, maybe clubs.
In fact, DDA suggest that the only really terrible lead is a spade, into declarer's second suit, about 6% worse than the others, and about 0.15 average tricks. The CA is the best lead by a slight margin at both IMPs and MPs.
