2D is a reverse and a 1 round force (1RF). North should bid 2 NT given the spade stop, or alternatively 3C. Difficult to stay out of 3 NT.

The lead of the unbid suit is normally a good idea here it is somewhat unattractive by west because of the KJ holding. Oppo are likely to have say 23hcp and thus east is likely to have only a ~ 6hcp. U are essentially hoping that east has the QS or AS in that 6hcp. A major lead is called for by the bidding. A heart lead going thru dummy's suit is somewhat less risky as any of pard's honours in hearts are likley to be sitting over dummy's honours.

At another table north passed the 1C opener. A 6 hcp balanced hand should continue to bid as pard could have a big hand, as South did

  1. Even 2D was not forcing (but it unequivocally is) north should not pass 2D as south's clubs should be longer and therefore north should at the very least give a preference to 3C.
