West has a 15hcp, so perhaps not playing ACOL. 2S was alerted. IF 1 NT was 13-15 then there is a simple raise to 3 NT unless they have a mechanism to find out about 5 card majors in the opener's hand.
A spade lead by North seems better than the diamond. Both stand to lose a trick, but with spades u have some chance of the suit getting set up given reasonable chance of 2 outside entries. Further analysis is called for.

ReplyDelete1H 1S; 2NT shows 18-19
However
1H 2C/D; 2NT shows 15-19
These ranges are much better than any scheme where you have to jump to 3NT as responder is unlimited and especially with extra distribution 3NT will make it difficult for partner to show that distribution.
After a two-level response in a new suit 2NT forcing - responder has shown 10+ and opener 15+ so both partners know they are going to game. Often responder will simply raise 2NT to 3NT.
1H 2C; 2NT 3NT ...
If opener has 18-19 then you are allowed to raise to 4NT to invite slam. This is a quantitative raise.
There is one other awkward auction. That is when responder raises directly which might be based on only three hearts.
1H 2H; 2NT would show (usually) only four hearts and about 17-18 points. Therefore with 15-16 you may need to pass and risk playing a 4=3 fit. With some 16s you might upgrade and treat the hand like 17. Having 15-16 with a 4Major-333 or 44Majors-32minors and a possible three card raise is a weak point for Acol.
For DDA explanation see bd 8. Here there is a huge advantage to leading the spade at IMPs, almost 50% better than the next best option, the passive club. At MPs it has only a mild advantage over the club lead. It is emphasized however that these results could swing round somewhat depending on the assumptions u make for the oppo's hands, eg does the range finder hand have a 4 card major (the failure to use Stayman probably suggests yes, does the 3H indicate both a max hcp and a 5 card suit, etc. This hi-lites the importance of asking oppo for explanations of the bidding. Often the explanations are rudimentary, eg "2S is a range finder". Feel free to interrogate further, eg "yes, but what does it say about hand shape".
