On such a strong hand 2C is reasonable. Partnerships usually play this as a game force(GF) or near GF. With a weak hand of < ~8hcp partner normally responds 2D. Given 2C is a GF North doesn't need to hurry the bidding and 3C would be fine, and would allow a heart fit to be found if there was one. 2S is normally considered a positive response with a good suit and partnership starts looking for slam.

East played the QS as opening lead. This could hit gold if pard has the AS, otherwise it could cost a trick. U want to make a lead where if pard gets in with another suit (or u get in with the QS) u have created a trick with your lead - using your tempo. The best for this is the QH. If pard has the KH then it can be cashed when either is in. Otherwise it is unlikely to cost a trick.

At another table North opened 1 NT. This is simply not correct.

  1. Assuming a 2C opening (I don't mind 1C either), the auction should look something like:

    2C 2D
    3C 3S
    4H 5C

    2D is negative
5C is a just a preference. A partner who goes past 3NT must be very distribution (or very strong). Five hearts are possible but longer clubs are certain.
