  1. I would bid 2H as North. As partner is a passed hand there is no risk of missing game therefore OK to crib a point (or two). Many in east's position X to show 4 spades, therefore 1S shows 5 spades. Over 3C East should aim for 3NT given the double stop in hearts. Highly likely to receive a heart lead, so don't worry about no diamond stop.

Spade opening lead is not good given dummy has bid spades. Unbid suit looks like the best chance to establish a trick (and on a very good day may even get a ruff).

  2. Interesting diamond suit. Against NT leading a high diamond blocks the suit. So if you could get back in the diamonds are blocked or if south cashes another high diamond the 9 becomes a second stopper. That is all academic though as declarer might not let anyone in soon enough and if the clubs are run NS have to make an uncomfortable number of discards.

Against the actual contract of 5C I would also seriously consider a heart lead - the ace. When you have a six card suit and partner did not raise there is a reasonable chance that partner has a singleton.
