  1. Auctions opening 2C often end up with a confused feel about them. Best to avoid in marginal cases such as here. It is admittedly possible to miss game if partner passes 1C, but it makes the auction a lot easier if he responds with anything but pass. Here eg North could reverse in 2D over a 1 level bid.
    5D is a strange bid, 4C would seem more natural.

    1. 4D would be ok also. 5D is poor because it forces south to 6C just to give a preference.

      After 1C I would definitely respond with this south hand.

      should get you to 4S comfortably.
