    The opening lead is questionable. The AK hearts would be standard here, not only is it safe it also allows a look at dummy and partner's signal to determine the play at trick 2.

    North's hand is ideal for a 1NT Acol bid.
    At another table: p 1d 3h ap
    Most play 3h by east as a pre-empt, whereas east's hand is much too strong for that.

  2. With 17 hcp east can double 1NT for penalties rather than bidding 2H. Then when or if NS takeout EW will have excellent prospects of bidding game.
