  1. East is too strong for 2H. Needs to make an invitational to game bid. North's 4S bid is questionable at this vulnerability. Think of it like this. You have 5 tricks (4 spades and a diamond), partner on a good day may have 2 tricks, and very unlikely to have 3 tricks, thus you are at best likely to make 7 tricks, or go 3 light - which if doubled would be a bottom board. If NS are playing weak jump overcalls (same as a weak 2 opening bid) then the North hand would be suitable for a 2S bid over 1H. East should double 4S. It has two quick tricks and partner bid to game so should have plenty of additional firepower.

  2. With hindsight it is best for EW to bid 5H but it is very hard to judge. West needs partner to have the equivalent of two aces and the hQ. On the other hand East is balanced and cannot imagine a sure 11 tricks. In fact 11 tricks require the club break.
