Partnerships vary as to whether to open 1d or 1c on these hands.

  1. I normally open 1C. This works out better in uncontested auctions. In particular you get both minors into the picture - partner can raise clubs or bid diamonds. Partner can't bid clubs without 10+ hcp after 1D.

On the other hand if you open 1C and the auction becomes competitive sometimes you can get into trouble with no easy bid, for example 1C (1S) X (P); ? On this auction you do not have a good bid.
